Moving abroad?

An international move can be somewhat stressful. movingabroad.net helps you to plan and organize your move. Here are some hints and tips:

Moving guidelines for moving abroad

  • Move on a weekday if possible, when banks, government offices and utilities are open.

  • Order preprinted address labels with your new address. This will make the change of address process easier.

  • Work on packing in just one room at a time (instead of more all at once) to keep things organized.

  • Mark each box with its contents and destination room. This will help you and your movers to know in which room the boxes belong.

  • Choose a “packing room” ahead of time and box up a few things each day.

  • Use packing as a way to clean out belongings for a garage sale, donations, and/or the recycling center. This will save you both money and time.

  • Use t-shirts, pillows and towels as extra padding around fragile items when you’re packing. This will save you room in your boxes.

  • Tape boxes along the seams where the flaps meet together.

  • Create 1 or 2 “Open Me First” boxes per room. In these boxes you have to put things you’ll need first at your new location.

  • Stack boxes with the heaviest on the bottom, lightest on top to prevent crushing.

  • Keep each box below 30 pounds with an absolute maximum of 50 pounds. Heavier boxes lead to injuries, and are more likely to burst their tape and tend to get dropped.

  • Keep a bathroom scale in the room you're packing so you can keep the boxes below the weight limits.

  • NEVER pack explosives, combustibles (gasoline), pets, liquids or food of any kind. These could cause damage and will void your insurance.
